Sachin Tendulkar retires from IPL, says I am forty, have to accept reality

Kolkata, May 27 (IANS): Batting great Sachin Tendulkar Sunday bid adieu to the Indian Premier League, two days after his illustrious former India teammate Rahul Dravid, and moments after his side Mumbai Indians were crowned champions at the iconic Eden Gardens.

Tendulkar, who retired from ODIs in December last year, missed Sunday's final against two-time champions Chennai Super Kings due to an injury on his left wrist he picked up while batting against Sunrisers Hyderabad May 13.

"This is my last IPL. I had taken the decision before the start of the tournament," said the 40-year-old Tendulkar in a matter of fact way as the TV interviewer was taken aback.

"I have waited 21 years to win the first World Cup and six years for the IPL. It has been a great and memorable journey with the team," said Tendulkar, who got a grand send-off as he was lifted by his team mates before the customary victory lap.

Tendulkar's wife Anjali also joined in minutes later.

"We have to be realistic about it. I've played six seasons with the Mumbai Indians and I have completely enjoyed it. This was the best season for Mumbai Indians. Before this, 2010 was the best season," he said.

Soon after, his teammates clamoured to get him in the centre while posing for group photographs.

"This is the perfect time to say thank you to my supporters and well-wishers. I cannot wait to lift the trophy," said the little master.

Tendulkar scored 2,334 runs averaging 34.83 in 78 IPL matches. He has a strike rate of 119.81 and struck one century and 13 fifties.

"I think this is the right time to stop playing the IPL. I am 40. Got to accept it. I had decided this was my last season."

Friday night, another Indian great Dravid had announced his retirement from the IPL after his side Rajasthan Royals went down to Mumbai Indians in the play-off.

Days ago, Australian legend Adam Gilchrist also announced his decision to quit playing the tournament.

People may say Sachin should have retired from cricket earlier itself, he is now retiring to give his son a chance etc. Although today the spectator doesnt feel the pressure when india is down because of likes of Dhoni Virat etc in the field. Sachin presence was a must in 90s and Yuvi Virat etc.... Sachin is thier role model. It was the game of Sachin in 1990s that showed today players how to over come the pressure.

one instance like to share " few years before when Aussies tour India They had put a mamoth target of 349 runs. Sachin scored 175 of just 135 balls leavind others to complete the job and India became all out for 347. Rain scored 60.
Rest couldnt even score remaining 115 runs. THis shows what a man SRT is.....

Thank God finally he retired. Some people were talking that he will play for another 4 to 5 years. He should retire from International level too so that young cricketers can get chance to play. He will not retire for another some years because if he retires BCCI will stop his annual payment. After all playing for money. Soon he may contest election from Congress ticket.

That is a sensible decision taken by Sachin. Or else he would be hired by no one in next IPL. Please a arrange a Test Cricket world cup and let India win it. So he will say i am going for good from all forms of cricket.

Please improve your thinking, did you saw full FINAL match, if result is already fixed then why Mumbai Indians struggled to get 148 on score board.

Hats off to a man who has dedicated his life to cricket.
He did not get distracted like his friend Vinod Kambli,a great talent who lost his way to the glamour world.
The same thing is happening to people like Sreesanth and Vijender.
They get into modelling and late night partying.
Success has gone to their head! They are paying the price for that.

People like Dravid and Sachin only think about cricket and don't get into nonsense around them.
Which is why Virat Kohli,Rohit Sharma etc. will never be a Dravid or Sachin!

    Right decision at Right time.

There was no cricketer of Sachin's standard and it would be big surprise if another Sachin will come into existence in the near future.

It is true that you have gracefully retired from IPL. you have achieved so much fame because of your hard work, which will be remembered for generation to come. Clean & cool person you are.

God bless you in your future endeavours.

Its really hard for one to believe that The legend has turned 40and is retiring

Sachin laid down the foundation for the modern Indian cricket team. during the time of Azar Sidhu Jadeja.... took it to a golden era with Sourav Rahul kumble...... And saw the glory of it during the time of Dhoni Yuvaraj...

But one thing is for sure er really miss the man sachin in the ground.

People like Sachin are born and not made....

Sachin's retirement from IPL is the clear indication that Mumbai's Win in IPL6 was pre-determined.. He might be a legend..But if we carefully examine there seems to be a foul play.Sachin wanted to Win World Cup before retiring.. it did not happen in so many yrs.. but at last India won World Cup and Sachin retired from 1 day matches..Now he badly wanted to win IPL and LO.. Behold.. wat a miracle.. mumbai won it.. and Sachin retires.. Thers no doubt that politicians have blind folded us Indians.. But now even our Favourite cricket stars have started doing it.. Clearly.. Mumbai's win Yesterday is no miracle!! It was Fixed! yea.. dats wat it looks like clearly.. This is my personal Opinion..

What you saw? u saw how Raina, Bravo etc. were out...they were playing like catch practice. In IPL maximum matches are fixed. The truth will not come out because maximum people are involved (Politicians / Burocrates / Bollywood / Ex Cricketers etc etc.).. WHAT A SHAME TO CRICKET????

At world cup and now at IPL6 he mucked in for the victory lap leaving the captains who won the tournament, otherwise he would loose on advertisements which is his main bread and butter to be in limelight. Now he realise that he is forty-plus otherwise his son will not get a chance.

The age of 40 is young in today standards. The cricket athlet should be fit and perform with form. Sachin still has all these qualities , its too early to hang his boots in twenty twenty IPL. Atleast ten years from now , I hope he reverts his decission upon fans out cry.

He could have retired from ODI when they won the world cup and would have retired from IPL ay be after 2 years down the line.
Having said that, it was pleasure watching him play all these years in all the format of the game. Now its a time for him to contribute his experience and skills to other team as a Coach.
