Stockholm, March 28 (IANS): Norwegian speed skater Hjalmar Andersen, a triple gold medallist at the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics, has died at the age of 90.
The Norwegian Skating Association said Andersen, known to many as Hjallis, died Wednesday after falling earlier this week at his home. The cause of death was not given, reports Xinhua.
Andersen won in Oslo the 1,500m, 5000m and 10,000m events, becoming the most successful athlete at the Games. He was also a triple world champion between 1950 and 1952.
Andersen also set four world records during his career, including the first sub-17 minute 10,000m world record in 1949.
