New Delhi, Oct 15: Vishvajit More created history by becoming the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win a silver medal at the U23 World Championships, while Komal and Diksha Malik remained in contention for bronze medals.

More, who already had two bronze medals from previous editions of the U23 World Championships, narrowly missed out on gold after losing a fiercely contested final 12-13 to Georgia’s Koba Karumidze.

More began his campaign with a close 10-8 victory over Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata before defeating Iranian U20 world champion Armin Shamsipour 8-1 in the quarterfinals. He then overcame Russia’s Malik Gigiev 7-4 in the semifinals to secure his place in the final.

Other Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers failed to reach the medal rounds. Chetan lost his pre-quarterfinal bout in the 63kg category, while Karan Kamboj suffered a technical superiority defeat in the qualification round of the 87kg category.

In the women’s competition, Komal lost her semifinal bout by technical superiority to Ukraine’s Alina Filipovych and will now compete for bronze.

Diksha Malik also remained in contention for a bronze medal in the 68kg category. However, Mansi Lather bowed out after losing her quarterfinal 9-10 to Italy’s Laura Godino.
