Mangaluru: Team effort saves mother, twins in high-risk pregnancy at Indiana Hospital

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 8: Indiana Hospital announced the successful management of a rare and exceptionally high-risk twin pregnancy, highlighting the expertise, precision, and coordinated efforts of its multidisciplinary surgical team.

A 42-year-old primigravida, referred from a medical college hospital, presented with an IVF-conceived twin pregnancy complicated by placenta percreta, with the placenta invading the rectum and resulting in torrential bleeding. Under the expert guidance of Dr Aswini Viswanadh, consultant gynaecologist, the patient was admitted and meticulously managed with careful multidisciplinary planning.

The medical team, comprising Dr Nihal Ali, gastroenterologist; Dr Bhavana Sherigar, senior consultant, OBG; Dr Karthik Velmurugan, consultant surgical oncologist; Dr Naveen P Gopal, consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon; and Dr Prateek Vaswani, consultant and head of CTVS, successfully performed a lower segment caesarean section (LSCS), followed by a hysterectomy and bowel resection.

The case was further complicated by severe, refractory anaemia, with the patient requiring nearly 11 units of blood during her treatment. Through precise surgical intervention, vigilant monitoring, and comprehensive postoperative care, the team successfully navigated the significant challenges associated with this complex pregnancy. The hospital’s paediatric team, led by Dr Ali Kumble, chairman of Indiana Hospital, managed the babies with great care.

The mother and both babies made a safe recovery and were discharged from the hospital in a stable condition.

This successful outcome stands as a testament to the clinical expertise, surgical precision, teamwork, and leadership of the Indiana Hospital team in managing complex and life-threatening obstetric cases.
