Mumbai, Oct 8: A massive fire broke out at a ground-plus-one-storey labour camp at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Project Affected Persons (PAP) project in Tata Colony, Mulund East, on Thursday, triggering panic among workers living at the premises.

The labour camp is located within a project complex being developed for the rehabilitation of families displaced from Dharavi. The project is reportedly being developed by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.

Several workers fled the camp after the fire broke out, resulting in chaos at the spot. The blaze is suspected to have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone East 3) Abhaysinha Deshmukh said seven gas cylinders had exploded during the incident. "During the incident, seven gas cylinders exploded. All occupants of the premises were safely evacuated," he said.

Around 15 fire tenders, along with ambulances, Navghar police personnel and senior police officers, rushed to the spot after receiving information about the fire. Fire brigade teams were engaged in efforts to bring the flames under control.

According to the DCP, all occupants of the labour camp were safely evacuated. No casualties or deaths have been reported so far. Police have also deployed necessary security arrangements at the site while the exact cause of the fire is being investigated.
