Karnataka govt bans use, manufacture of half-helmets

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Oct 1: In a major move concerning road safety, the state government has decided to strictly prohibit the use, production, and manufacturing of unsafe half-helmets across Karnataka.

Transport minister Byrathi Suresh clarified that the government will take legal action not only against two-wheeler riders using half-helmets but also against the companies manufacturing them.

The crucial decision was taken during a meeting on road safety and traffic rule violations, chaired jointly by home minister Priyank Kharge and transport minister Byrathi Suresh at the Vikasa Soudha here.

Currently, despite traffic regulations prohibiting the use of half-helmets, they continue to be widely manufactured and sold in the market. A majority of riders purchase these helmets merely to evade traffic penalties rather than for actual head protection.

Recognizing that the continued sale of these helmets is a direct violation of existing safety norms, the government has now decided to bring the manufacturing units under the ambit of the law and initiate strict action against them, minister Suresh stated.

With the current state of roads and potholes in Bangalore, wearing a full helmet is the best protection. The government must take accountability for road maintenance and enforce a strict ban on unsafe half-helmets.

Govt should encourage people to wear helmets and if they really care about people they can collect fine and give them a helmet. What about accidents and death occurs after wearing proper helmet due to govt bad infrastructure and govt should make strict compensation rule.

Leave the decision to wear helmet or not to the riders. Let them decide how valuable is their life. The government should focus on improving the road quality - eliminate potholes and unscientific humps. Where are the lanes? This task seems to be a rocket science for the government as they are unable to fix these issues even after so many years!

Also ban the manufacturing of single use plastic carry bags. Purchase anything from a small veg seller or a petty shopkeeper, you will end up with a flimsy plastic carry bag. No amount of raids and penalties will help unless it's manufacturing is totally banned. 8.5 9

It is a known fact that the minority community in India have no problem whatsoever with decisions taken by the Congress government. Proper roads and strict enforcement of traffic and road rules is the need of the hour. Helmets whether full or half does not matter in the city as traffic speeds are below 20 Kms/ hr.

A very good decision taken by the state government. It was long due since the half helmets serve no purpose in protecting the rider.
