Nashik, Jul 18: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by a man, who was later found hanging from a tree in the same locality in a suspected case of murder-suicide in Maharashtra's Nashik city, police said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Sahil Ashok Lavare (26), allegedly attacked Vaishnavi Avare (20) near a temple in the Indiranagar area late on Friday night before allegedly ending his life at a jogging track in the locality during the early hours of Saturday.

According to police, Sahil repeatedly stabbed the woman and slit her throat with a knife. Residents rushed to the spot after hearing her screams, but the accused managed to flee. Vaishnavi succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

At around 3 am, police found Sahil hanging from a tree at a nearby jogging track.

The victim was a student and was staying as a paying guest in the area, police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the accused had met on Friday evening. Police suspect the attack may have been triggered by a one-sided love affair.

A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact motive behind the crime, police added.
