Bicholim, Jul 12: A lineman helper with the Electricity Department died after suffering an electric shock while carrying out tree-trimming work at the Asnoda Water Treatment Plant, sparking concerns over workplace safety for field personnel.
The deceased has been identified as Manthan Aroskar, a resident of Maulingem in Bicholim taluka.
According to preliminary information, Aroskar was trimming overgrown trees within the plant premises when the metal cutter he was operating allegedly came into contact with a live electricity line. He was rushed for medical treatment but was declared dead.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
The incident has reignited concerns over safety standards followed during maintenance operations involving electricity workers.
Local resident Sachin Mayekar alleged that the Electricity Department has repeatedly failed to give adequate priority to the safety of linemen and support staff despite previous fatal accidents.
Referring to an earlier electrocution incident involving a lineman from Bicholim taluka, he claimed that sufficient corrective measures had not been implemented to prevent similar tragedies.
Mayekar urged the authorities to undertake a comprehensive review of existing safety protocols, ensure workers are provided with appropriate protective equipment, and strictly enforce on-site safety procedures during hazardous maintenance work to minimise the risk of future accidents.
