Mangaluru: MRPL celebrates World Environment Day 2026

Mangaluru, Jun 11: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) celebrated World Environment Day 2026 at the employees recreation centre under the theme “Inspired by nature. for climate. for our future.”

Padma Shri awardee Shyam Sundar Paliwal, renowned environmentalist and social reformer from Piplantri, Rajasthan, was the chief guest, while Dr Manju R, environmental officer, KSPCB, Mangaluru, attended as the special invitee.

The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp and watering of a plant in the presence of Nandakumar Velayudhan Pillai, director (refinery); Devendra Kumar, director (finance) & CFO; N Anandha Kumar, ED (refinery); Deepak Prabhakar P, ED (marketing & business development); and P Sujith, ED (projects).

Shyam Sundar Paliwal emphasized the importance of tree plantation and protection of environment and natural resources. He also emphasized to adopt eco-friendly habits and sustainable practices. Nandakumar V Pillai, director Refinery highlighted MRPL’s sustainability initiatives, including the pilot PET bottle recycling plant, and stressed the importance of climate action and energy transition. Devendra Kumar urged adoption of eco-friendly practices such as reducing plastic use, conserving resources, and waste segregation. Dr Manju R appreciated MRPL’s environmental initiatives and highlighted the role of youth in environmental action.

During the programme, MRPL’s environmental performance highlights were presented, and the Environment Pledge was administered in Kannada, Hindi, and English. The managing director’s message was also read out, in which he urged every member of the MRPL family to serve as a brand ambassador for sustainability and actively contribute to environmental stewardship.

A skit on the adverse effects of excessive mobile phone usage among youth, presented by Dinesh Attavar’s group, Mangaluru, received appreciation from the audience. Prizes were distributed to winners of competitions conducted during the month-long environment drive, and saplings and jute bags were distributed to participants.
