Mangaluru, Jun 11: Widespread rainfall lashed several parts of Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday, bringing relief from humid weather but also causing minor damage and waterlogging in some areas.
Heavy showers were reported from Bantwal, BC Road, Kalladka, Vitla, Kanyana, Pervai, Puttur, Bettampady, Kabaka, Belthangady, Charmady, Madanthyaru, Venooru, Kokkada, Moodbidri, Mulki, Uppinangady, Karaya, Perne, Sullia, Surathkal, Konaje and Ullal. Mangaluru city also witnessed intermittent rain throughout the day.

In Adyar, where National Highway works are underway, a few houses were inundated after rainwater accumulated in the area. Residents alleged that the highway had been elevated by dumping soil without providing adequate drainage facilities, resulting in waterlogging. They demanded the construction of a retaining wall and improvement of the drainage system to prevent recurring flooding.
Officials said five houses suffered partial damage due to rain-related incidents during the day, while 43 electricity poles were damaged across the district.
According to rainfall data recorded during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, Belthangady received 19.3 mm of rain, Moodbidri 17.5 mm, Mulki 16.4 mm, Kadaba 14 mm, Mangaluru 13.2 mm, Sullia 7.9 mm, Bantwal 6.8 mm, Puttur 6.3 mm and Ullal 5.9 mm. The district recorded an average rainfall of 12.9 mm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the coastal region on June 11 and an Orange Alert for June 12, forecasting heavy rain accompanied by thunder and gusty winds.
The weather department has also warned of winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 60 kmph along the Karnataka coast till June 12 and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Udupi district received moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Though the weather remained cloudy throughout the day, rainfall was largely intermittent.
Damage to houses caused by rain and wind over the past two days has resulted in losses estimated at Rs 2.05 lac.
Rain was reported from Kapu, Hebri, Karkala, Brahmavar, Kundapur and Byndoor taluks. During the last 24 hours, Karkala recorded 28.4 mm of rainfall, followed by Kapu (22 mm), Udupi (21.8 mm), Brahmavar (20.4 mm), Hebri (17.1 mm) and Kundapur (13.4 mm), according to the IMD.
