Fuel price hike boosts EV usage in Karnataka; power demand rises by 2% in two months

Bengaluru, May 27: The increasing use of electric vehicles (EVs) in Karnataka is now having a direct impact on the state’s electricity consumption.

According to ESCOMs, electricity demand in the state has risen by around 2 percent during April and May due to EV charging. In response, the energy department and power supply companies have begun taking measures to address the growing demand.

With demand for fast-charging stations rising particularly in Bengaluru and along highways, the government is planning to establish new solar-powered EV charging units.

Officials said that the increase in electricity demand during the last two months is mainly due to charging requirements of EVs already in use rather than newly purchased vehicles.

Growing public awareness about green transportation and the impact of the global fuel crisis have also led to a rise in EV bookings. As a result, demand for fast EV charging stations has increased across various parts of the state, especially along national highways and in public places.

In this regard, the energy department has partnered with private companies to set up solar-powered fast-charging stations. Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) has already continued its partnership with state and national highway authorities for the project.

A senior ESCOM official stated that EV users are spread across residential, industrial, commercial and LT (6-C) categories, leading to increased electricity usage in all segments.

Officials said that modern EVs are equipped with batteries ranging from 30 to 90 KWH capacity, increasing the demand for DC fast charging. Since customers expect full charging within just 30 minutes, larger solar panel areas are required.

Meanwhile, the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) has once again urged the implementation of separate meter systems to accurately estimate electricity consumption from EVs.

At present, most consumers charge EVs using household electricity meters, making it difficult to obtain precise data, officials said.

They added that separate meters would help accurately assess EV-related electricity usage, rising demand and future policy planning requirements.
