Kannur, Apr 25: In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her son in Kolakkad in Kannur late on Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as Geethamma, a local leader of the Mahila Morcha and a businesswoman who owned two beauty parlours. Her son, Christy (25), later surrendered at the Kelakam Police Station.

According to police, the incident occurred around 10.30 pm following a heated argument between the mother and son, who were known to have frequent disputes. Neighbours said they heard loud arguments from the house, but did not initially suspect anything unusual as such incidents were common.

Police said Christy allegedly stabbed his mother in the neck with a knife found inside the house, leading to her death.

After the incident, the accused reportedly called a friend and later went to the police station on the same friend’s scooter to surrender.

Christy, who was earlier pursuing a BBA course in Bengaluru, had discontinued his studies midway and returned home. Police said he was addicted to drugs and is suspected to have committed the crime under the influence of narcotics.

Geethamma was active in public life and well known in the locality. The motive behind the murder is yet to be fully established.

The body has been shifted to Pariyaram Medical College for postmortem. Further investigation is underway.
