Massive turnout marks opening phase of high-stakes election in West Bengal

New Delhi, Apr 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to vote enthusiastically as West Bengal commenced the first phase of its Assembly elections on Thursday, covering 152 constituencies.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister encouraged widespread participation, describing the election as a “festival of democracy.” He made a special appeal to young voters and women across the state to come out in large numbers and exercise their right to vote.

Polling began at 7:00 a.m., spanning 16 districts and signaling the start of a closely contested electoral battle. Early scenes showed strong voter engagement, with long lines forming outside polling booths soon after voting opened. At several locations, including a primary health centre and designated polling stations, steady turnout was recorded in the initial hours.

This phase involves approximately 3.6 crore eligible voters who will decide the fate of 1,478 candidates. The constituencies are distributed across both northern and southern regions of the state, underscoring the broad scope of this electoral exercise.

To maintain order and ensure a smooth voting process, authorities have deployed a record 2,407 companies of Central Armed Police Forces. Officials highlighted that this extensive security presence reflects a heightened focus on conducting peaceful and fair elections, particularly in sensitive areas.

Although the number of polling phases has been reduced compared to previous elections, security measures have been significantly intensified. The current two-phase schedule marks a notable shift from the eight-phase format in 2021 and six phases in 2016, with new protocols aimed at stricter enforcement of electoral regulations.

The contest is largely seen as a direct face-off between the ruling party, seeking another term in office, and the principal opposition, which is aiming to expand its presence and form the government. The stakes remain high as both sides push for a decisive mandate.

Voting for the remaining 142 constituencies is scheduled for April 29, with the counting of votes set to take place on May 4.
