Karkala, Apr 11: Karkala police have arrested Soumya Shetty, the wife of businessman Sudeep Shetty, for allegedly abetting his suicide. Following her arrest, she was produced before a court which remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody.
Sudeep Shetty died by suicide at his residence in Karkala on March 22. His family subsequently accused Soumya of driving him to the act.
According to the complaint filed by Sudeep’s father, B Damodara (62), Sudeep had married Soumya, a resident of Kukkundoor Himmuje Kaje, at the Puttur sub-registrar’s office on February 17, 2026. The couple then resided at Banglegudde Kaje in Joduraste, Karkala taluk.

The complaint states that on March 17, while Sudeep was travelling with his mother to a pooja function, Soumya allegedly intercepted their car on her scooter near Nelyadi town. It is claimed she verbally abused the pair and threatened to kill Sudeep.
On March 22, Soumya reportedly contacted relatives to inform them that Sudeep had consumed a poisonous substance. He was initially admitted to Nitte Gajria Hospital in Karkala before being shifted to Adarsha Hospital in Udupi, and eventually to Yenepoya Hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.
Despite medical intervention, Sudeep succumbed at approximately 3:09 am on March 29.
The complaint alleges that "continuous mental harassment" by Soumya forced Sudeep to take the extreme step.
Following a preliminary inquiry, the superintendent of police, Udupi district, transferred the case on April 1 to Karkala Town police station’s in-charge inspector Manjappa D R.
Based on evidence gathered during the investigation, the accused was arrested on April 11.
