Los Angeles, Apr 11: Oscar-winning actor Anne Hathaway is set to appear in a strikingly different avatar in her upcoming film Mother Mary, where she plays a pop star navigating a complex and unconventional relationship with a fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel.
Directed by David Lowery, the film draws significant creative inspiration from global pop icon Taylor Swift, particularly her Reputation concert era, which reportedly influenced the visual style, staging, and structure of the film’s concert sequences.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Lowery described Swift’s Reputation concert film as a key reference point, saying it was studied extensively during production. He revealed that sequences from the album were broken down shot by shot to help design the film’s stadium performances, especially given the challenge of working with a limited budget.

Lowery also shared that he and Hathaway attended one of Swift’s concerts during production and even incorporated elements inspired by the singer into the creative process. He added that a friendship bracelet gifted by Hathaway featured Swift’s song Anti-Hero, reflecting the strong artistic influence of the singer on the project.
Hathaway herself described the experience as creatively and emotionally challenging. Speaking to Vogue, she said she had to embrace being a “beginner” during filming, as much of the film’s music was not ready at the start of production.
“I had to submit to being a beginner… showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck, and it has to be okay,” she said, describing the process as both humbling and transformative.
She added that not having access to completed music forced her to let go of control, calling it a difficult but ultimately rewarding experience.
Mother Mary does not yet have an official release date, but with its unusual subject and strong pop culture influences, the film is already generating significant curiosity in the entertainment world.
