Harry Potter teaser sparks backlash over Snape casting; actor faces online abuse

Daijiworld Media Network – London

London, Mar 26: The first teaser of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has triggered controversy online, with sections of fans criticising the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.

The backlash follows the reveal of Essiedu’s first look as the iconic character, originally portrayed by late actor Alan Rickman in the film franchise. Some social media users criticised the choice, while others accused the makers of attempting to be “woke”.

Amid the criticism, several fans expressed support for Adam Driver, suggesting he would have been a preferred choice for the role.

The controversy has taken a serious turn, with Essiedu revealing that he has received death threats over the casting. In an interview, the actor said he had been subjected to severe online abuse, including threats to his life.

Despite the backlash, Essiedu said he remains committed to the role, highlighting that the core themes of the Harry Potter story revolve around love, acceptance, and overcoming hate.

The new adaptation features a fresh cast, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actor John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer plays Minerva McGonagall and Nick Frost takes on the role of Rubeus Hagrid.

The series is slated for release during the Christmas season.
