Udupi, Mar 21: Former MLA Raghupati Bhat has alleged that Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna is deliberately obstructing the construction of a beachside resort at Badanidiyoor village due to personal animosity, despite there being no legal hurdles.
Addressing a press conference at his residence in Udupi on Saturday, March 21, Bhat emphasised that he is primarily an entrepreneur rather than a career politician. “Politics is not my profession but my interest. With the aim of promoting tourism, I planned to build a resort on 1.60 acres of coastal land and had obtained the required permissions,” he said.

Bhat alleged that although he applied for a single layout approval two years ago, it has not been granted so far. “Even after approaching the High Court, my application was rejected citing various reasons. However, on February 20, a directive was issued to the Urban Development Authority to grant the single layout approval. Despite this, the approval letter has not been issued even after a month,” he added.
He stated that during his tenure as a three-time MLA, he addressed public issues without discrimination. “But now I am facing difficulties myself. For the past 24 months, MLA Yashpal Suvarna has been creating obstacles due to personal enmity,” he alleged.
He further accused the district administration of remaining silent. “Even court orders are not being respected. The Urban Development Commissioner appears to be succumbing to pressure and intimidation,” he claimed.
Announcing his next course of action, Bhat said he would stage a peaceful protest in front of the Urban Development Authority office on March 23 from 9.30 am to 6 pm. “I will continue the protest until justice is served. Either the single layout approval must be granted, or a written rejection should be given. If a rejection is provided, I will withdraw the protest and pursue legal action,” he said.
