Fadnavis seeks Chakankar’s resignation over Kharat scandal

Mumbai, Mar 20: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar to resign amid a growing controversy over her alleged association with self-styled astrologer Ashok Kharat, who has been arrested in a rape and exploitation case.

The resignation was sought following the Nashik case involving Kharat, also known as “Captain.” Chakankar has reportedly not attended office since March 18 and is said to be out of contact with her team.

The controversy escalated after photos and a video showing Chakankar with Kharat went viral on social media, triggering sharp reactions from opposition parties and public protests, including demonstrations in Pune demanding action.

Senior leader of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), Sanjay Raut, criticised Chakankar, stating that a person responsible for ensuring justice for women was seen performing rituals for a man accused of rape.

Social activist Anjali Damania also alleged that Chakankar had endorsed Kharat in the past.

Responding to the allegations, Chakankar denied wrongdoing and said she had full faith in the police investigation. “I am confident that the police will conduct a fair and impartial inquiry,” she stated in a post on X.

Kharat was arrested based on a complaint filed by a 35-year-old woman, who alleged that he lured her under the pretext of spiritual guidance, administered sedative-laced drinks, and sexually assaulted her multiple times between November 2022 and December 2025.

Police suspect that several other women may have been similarly exploited. Kharat is currently in police custody till March 24 as investigations continue.
