Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Feb 24: Three persons went missing after a car fell into a canal of the Jayakwadi Dam near Paithan town in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district late Monday night, police said.

The incident occurred around 11 pm near a college in Changatpuri village under the jurisdiction of Paithan. The car was travelling towards Paithan from Koradgaon in neighbouring Ahilyanagar district.

According to a police official, the driver reportedly took a wrong route and, upon realising the mistake, attempted to reverse the vehicle. However, he lost control, causing the car to plunge from a bridge into the right canal of the dam.

Two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Mukid Shaikh (35) and Nilofar Shaikh (30), went missing in the water. Raosaheb Khedkar, a local resident who rushed to their rescue, also went missing during the incident.

The driver, Altaf Pathan, managed to escape from the submerged vehicle and reach safety, the official said.

A search operation has been launched to trace the three missing persons, with local police and rescue teams deployed at the site.
