Udupi, Feb 23: The Udupi Diocesan fortnightly 'Uzwaad' marked the twelfth anniversary of its successful journey by honouring distinguished writers, awarding prizes to children who excelled in various competitions, and presenting a collage of devotional hymns ‘Mysterium’,staged by the Asthitva Group, Mangaluru, under the direction of Fr Alwyn Serrao.
The celebration began with a prayer hymn rendered by the choir of Mount Rosary Church, Santekatte. Fr Reginald Pinto, executive director of Sampada Udupi and a member of the Uzwaad Editorial Board, led a short benedictory prayer service, invoking god’s blessings upon the programme.

The anniversary celebration was presided over by Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, the Apostolic administrator of the Udupi Diocese. Other dignitaries on the dais included Msgr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, vicar general of the Udupi Diocese; Dr. Alphonse D’Lima and Valerian Menezes Kota, the distinguished writers who were honoured on the occasion; Fr. Denis D’Sa-PRO of Udupi Diocese and parish priest of St Anne’s Church, Thottam, Fr Alwyn Sequeira, editor of Uzwaad; and Nanu Marol, representative of Daiji Dubai.
In his welcome address, Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, chairman of the Deepa Trust, which publishes 'Uzwaad', reflected on the steady growth of the Udupi Diocesan fortnightly over the past 12 years. He acknowledged the leadership and encouragement of Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo, as well as the dedicated service of the three successive editors — Fr Chetan Lobo (OFM Cap), Fr Royson Fernandes, and the present editor, Fr Alwyn Sequeira (OCD) — for guiding the publication successfully. He also expressed appreciation for the valuable contributions of writers and the continued support of readers.
Following the welcome address, Flavia Castelino, a member of the editorial board, formally greeted the dignitaries on the dais by presenting them with floral bouquets.
Prizes were distributed to children who showcased their talents in the “Dress Like a Saint” competition and to those who excelled in illustrating Biblical episodes. The awards were presented by Nanu Marol, representative of Daiji Dubai.
Another major set of awards was presented for the competitions titled “See the Picture and Write a Short Story,” “See the Picture and Compose a Poem,” and the quiz competition. Participants earned points in each of these contests, and the individual who secured the highest score in every issue of 'Uzwaad' was recognised as the “Person of the Issue.”
Rita Menezes, aged 82, from Bendur, Mangaluru, was specially honoured for securing the highest cumulative score for the entire year.
In his address, Nanu Marol noted that Daiji Dubai has been associated with 'Uzwaad' since its inception, sponsoring prizes for various literary competitions jointly organised by 'Uzwaad' and Daiji Dubai. He suggested organising workshops and interactive gatherings for both seasoned and aspiring writers, emphasising that such initiatives would nurture emerging talent by giving young writers the opportunity to engage with and learn from experienced authors.
A significant highlight of Uzwaad’s twelfth anniversary celebration was the felicitation of two long-standing contributors — Dr Alphonse D’Lima and Valerian Menezes Kota. Before they were honoured by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo and the other dignitaries on the dais, Fr Denis D’Sa, PRO of the Udupi Diocese and Parish Priest of St Anne’s Church, Thottam, introduced the two distinguished writers to the audience. Dr Alphonse D’Lima has written for several periodicals and has been a consistent contributor to Uzwaad, offering articles on social and spiritual themes. Valerian Menezes has regularly contributed insightful pieces on contemporary political developments.
Both Dr Alphonse D’Lima and Valerian Menezes were honoured with a shawl, garland, memento, flower bouquet, and peta as tokens of appreciation.
Responding to the felicitation, Dr Alphonse D’Lima expressed his gratitude to the Deepa Trust and 'Uzwaad' fortnightly for recognising and honouring his contributions to the publication.
Valerian Menezes spoke about how he developed an interest in writing on a range of subjects, particularly the cooperative movement and political affairs. He also acknowledged Dr Alphonse D’Lima as his mentor, crediting him as his guiding inspiration in his writing journey.
