Bantwal, Feb 22: The Annual Catechism Day celebration and a solemn Eucharistic celebration was organised at Mother of God Church on February 22, in conjunction with the observance of the Year of Children 2026 and the celebration of Catechism Day.
The solemn holy Eucharist marked the beginning of the day’s celebration. The Mass was presided over by Dr Edward Barretto, Coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Darjeeling, who served as the main celebrant and guest of honour. He was assisted by the parish priest, Fr Anil Canute D’Mello and Fr Naveen Pinto, principal of Deva Matha English Medium School. The celebration was inspired by the motto, "We are little children, the fruits of God's Kingdom".

The Eucharistic celebration, centered on the dignity and special place of children in God’s plan, highlighted the importance of Christian formation. In his homily, the bishop emphasised the need to overcome temptations in light of the day’s Gospel reading. He encouraged the faithful, especially the children, to understand the true meaning of Lenten fasting—not merely as abstaining from food, but as making small sacrifices, growing in self-discipline and turning away from sin to draw closer to god.
He explained that Lenten sacrifices could take simple yet meaningful forms: keeping away from excessive use of mobile phones and social media; spending more time in prayer and reading the word of god; helping parents with household chores without being asked; showing kindness to classmates; forgiving those who hurt us; sharing with the poor and needy; avoiding gossip and harsh words; practicing honesty in studies and setting aside time each day for silent reflection. Such small acts of love and self-denial, he said, help us to become spiritually rich, disciplined in character and rooted more deeply in Christ.
Special prayers were offered for all the children of the parish, seeking god’s blessings upon their studies, growth and spiritual development. The liturgy was made vibrant through the active participation of children in the readings, choir and offertory procession.
Following the holy Mass, the Christian Education Commission organised a grand celebration of Catechism Day in the parish community hall. A vibrant cultural programme showcased the talents of the children through skits, songs, dances and creative presentations based on various teachings of the Bible. Their performances reflected their understanding of Sacred Scripture and their rootedness in faith.
A significant highlight of the celebration was the distribution of prizes to students who excelled in the catechism examinations. The meritorious students were honoured and appreciated for their dedication, hard work and commitment to learning the faith. This recognition encouraged all children to strive for deeper knowledge and stronger faith formation.
In his concluding message, the parish priest expressed heartfelt gratitude to the bishop for his gracious presence and guidance. He also emphasised the vital role of Christian education in building a value-based and faith-filled future generation. The Parish Pastoral Council vice president Noel Lobo, Parish Pastoral Council secretary Wilfred Lobo, Pastoral Commissions coordinator Seema Maria D’Cunha and catechism convenor Anitha D’Souza were present on the occasion.
The celebration concluded with a strong sense of joy, unity and renewed commitment as parents, teachers and children came together to celebrate their shared faith and to look forward with hope to the bright future of the parish community.
