Mangaluru: Tannirbhavi boat yard murder case; accused sentenced to 5 years imprisonment

Mangaluru, Feb 19: The 2nd additional district and sessions court has sentenced an accused to five years of imprisonment in connection with a 2023 murder case at the Mangala Boat Yard near Tannirbhavi Tree Park.

The convict has been identified as Johnson N V alias Binoy (53), a resident of Kannur district in Kerala. The court sentenced him to five years of simple imprisonment under Section 304(2) of the IPC and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.

Case background

On December 10, 2023, a dispute over financial matters broke out between Binu G, an ironworker, and Johnson, a woodworker, at the boat yard. The argument escalated inside their shared shed, leading Johnson to stab Binu in the chest with an iron chisel. Binu sustained fatal injuries and passed away, following which a murder case was registered at the Panambur police station.

The accused had been in judicial custody as an undertrial for the past three years and two months after being denied bail. Following a detailed trial, the court found him guilty.

The initial investigation was conducted by the then Panambur police station in-charge inspector Sandeep G S. Subsequently, inspector Manjunath M took over the probe and submitted the chargesheet to the court.
