Nakuul Mehta steps into ISRO scientist’s role, calls technical dialogues biggest challenge

Mumbai, Jan 29: Television and OTT star Nakuul Mehta, who has carved a niche for himself with a successful acting journey marked by both highs and lows, is now stepping into a completely new space — quite literally. The actor will be seen playing an ISRO rocket scientist in his upcoming show Space Gen Chandrayaan, inspired by India’s historic Chandrayaan 3 mission.

The series is based on ISRO’s Chandrayaan 3, blending real events with fictional elements, and also stars Shriya Saran and Danish Sait.

Speaking about the role, Nakuul admitted that the toughest part wasn’t just portraying the emotions of a scientist under pressure, but also delivering complex technical dialogue convincingly.

“That was the major part of my homework,” he said, revealing that he spent weeks preparing by repeatedly reading the jargon-heavy script in cafés across Versova, Bandra and Juhu. His aim, he added, was to ensure the technical lines sounded natural on screen and not overly complicated when spoken aloud.

Nakuul stressed that getting the finer details right was crucial for the role to feel believable. While he felt confident about handling emotional scenes, he said mastering the scientific language was not something that came naturally to him.

The show begins with the setback of Chandrayaan 2, after which his character is shown battling self-doubt and questioning his own worth. However, Nakuul said he has never personally experienced such a crisis in his own career.

“I've never been that person whose self-esteem or self-worth has been tied to my career or work,” he shared, adding that his upbringing and support system have helped him stay grounded. He explained that even if acting hadn’t worked out, he believes he would still have found purpose and happiness in life.

This outlook, Nakuul said, has helped him keep his professional and personal lives separate, making it easier to stay mentally light in the industry. He also mentioned that he doesn’t rely on the entertainment world for friendships or leisure, choosing instead to seek fulfilment outside work.

The actor further said that becoming a parent has strengthened his focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Interestingly, his co-stars Shriya Saran and Danish Sait are also parents to young children, which has created a shared understanding on set.

“I think what is common between the three of us is we're all new to parenting, which also means you want to finish your work, have a good time, and get home,” he said, adding that he has always believed in working with full focus and then returning to life beyond the sets.
