Kadaba, Jan 24: A quiet neighbourhood in Pade, Ramakunja, was transformed into a grisly crime scene on Saturday after a long-simmering domestic rift culminated in a horrific filicide.
A 17-year-old boy was shot dead at point-blank range by his own father, who subsequently turned a blade on himself in a botched suicide attempt.
The accused, identified as Vasanth Poojary, allegedly opened fire on his son, Moksha, using a firearm. The 17-year-old sustained a fatal gunshot wound and succumbed to his injuries instantly.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the scene took a further macabre turn. According to police sources, Poojary attempted to end his life by slitting himself with a knife. Alerted by the sound of gunfire, frantic locals rushed to the residence, discovering the teenager’s body and the father in a pool of blood. They moved swiftly to transport the critically injured Poojary to a hospital, where he remains under heavy police guard.
The investigation has shone a spotlight on a year of domestic turbulence. It is reported that Vasanth’s wife, Jayashree, had moved out of the family home nearly twelve months ago following a bitter fallout with her husband. She had been residing at her maternal home in Mangaluru ever since.
During this period of estrangement, the victim, Moksha, had been living alone with his father. While the motive remains a subject of investigation, the isolation and ongoing marital discord are believed to have pushed the household to its breaking point.
The Kadaba police have cordoned off the area for a forensic sweep. Based on a formal complaint lodged by the grieving mother, Jayashree, an FIR has been registered against Vasanth Poojary.
"The scene was grim, and the weapon has been seized for ballistics testing," a senior investigating officer noted.
"We have secured the hospital perimeter where the accused is being treated. Once he is deemed fit for questioning, we hope to establish the exact provocation behind this extreme violence," the officer added.
