Mumbai, Jan 21: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the reconstruction of the historic Bellasis Flyover, a key east-west arterial in the city, in just 15 months and six days. Work on the project had begun on October 1, 2024, and the flyover was finished four months ahead of schedule, BMC officials said.
Officials credited the early completion to seamless coordination between various departments, including the Municipal Bridges Department and the Railway authorities. The work order was issued in September 2024, and continuous efforts, meticulous planning, and phased execution allowed the project to progress smoothly despite challenges such as BEST bus relocations and legal proceedings.

A BMC official said, “The successful early completion demonstrates that infrastructure projects can be delivered ahead of schedule through strict planning and efficient implementation.” The phased execution plan also ensured work continued uninterrupted during the monsoon season. While Western Railway rebuilt the railway portion of the flyover, the BMC handled girder bracing, deck sheet installation, and approach road construction.
The flyover is set to open to traffic soon, pending issuance of a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the railway authorities. Final inspections and safety certifications were completed on January 6. Once operational, the Bellasis Flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion and benefit thousands of daily commuters.
Originally built during the British era, the Bellasis Flyover spans 333 meters and connects crucial areas, including Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central. The modernized flyover features a 7-meter-wide carriageway and spacious footpaths on both sides to ensure pedestrian safety.
With the new flyover set to reopen, congestion on Jangir Boman Behram Marg is expected to ease, restoring vital connectivity that had been disrupted for nearly two years.
