Kochi, Dec 31: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s mother, Santhakumari, passed away at her residence in Elamakkara, Ernakulam district, on Tuesday, December 30. She was 90. Mohanlal, who was in Kochi at the time, rushed to her house soon after receiving the news.

A native of Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district, Santhakumari had moved to Thiruvananthapuram with her family due to her husband Viswanathan Nair’s job. Viswanathan Nair, who passed away earlier, was a former bureaucrat and served as law secretary to the Kerala government. Santhakumari lived for several years at the family’s ‘Hill View’ residence on Kesavadev Road in Mudavanmugal, Thiruvananthapuram. She was later brought to Ernakulam by Mohanlal after reportedly suffering a stroke.

Mohanlal shared a close and affectionate bond with his mother and often spoke fondly of her in public. Notably, after returning to Kochi on receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the first person he met was his mother. On Mother’s Day earlier this year, the actor had shared a cherished old photograph with Santhakumari on social media.

The actor has previously said that his mother would feel distressed watching scenes in which he was beaten by villains on screen, especially during the early phase of his career when he portrayed negative roles.

Malayalam megastar Mammootty, accompanied by his wife Sulfath, visited Santhakumari’s residence in Elamakkara to pay his last respects. The mortal remains will be taken to Thiruvananthapuram, where the funeral is expected to be held on December 31.

Mohanlal is the younger of Santhakumari and Viswanathan Nair’s two sons. Their elder son, Pyarelal, passed away in 2000. Mohanlal is married to Suchitra, daughter of veteran producer K Balaji, and the couple has two children, Pranav and Vismaya.
