Mangaluru, Dec 28: Mangaluru Rural police have swiftly cracked a gold chain snatching case reported from the Yeyyadi area, arresting the accused within three days of the crime and recovering gold jewellery worth Rs 3.50 lac along with the vehicle used in the offence.
The incident took place on December 25, at around 6.30 pm, when Ratnavathi, a resident of Gurunagar, was returning home on foot with her daughter Rashmi after closing their shop at Yeyyadi.
As they were walking along Koppalkadu Road near Shankar Bhavan Hotel, an unidentified man approached them from behind and suddenly snatched the 32-gram gold mangalasutra from Ratnavathi’s neck before fleeing the scene. The stolen chain is estimated to be worth Rs 3.50 lac.

Following a complaint, Mangaluru Rural police registered a case under Crime No. 128/2025 invoking Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Acting under the direction of senior officers, a special investigation team led by the police inspector and sub-inspector launched a focused operation to trace the accused and recover the stolen property.
On December 28, at around 9.30 am, police arrested the accused, identified as Rohith, a native of Bantwal. The stolen 32-gram gold mangalasutra was recovered from his possession, and the electric scooter used to commit the crime was also seized. Further legal proceedings have been initiated.
The successful detection of the case and recovery of the stolen property was carried out under the guidance of the deputy commissioner of police (crime & traffic) and senior officers. The operation was led by Mangaluru Rural police inspector Gaviraj and sub-inspector Arun Kumar, with the support of police personnel Kamalaksha, Hanamareddy, Shankrappa, Sikander, Birendra, Ramesh, Pradeep and Mahesh, along with South ACP squad members Isaq and Akhtar, who played a key role in the operation.
