Mumbai, Dec 5: The year 2023 firmly belonged to Shah Rukh Khan and marked Bollywood’s triumphant resurgence after being overshadowed for two years by the South Indian cinema wave that rode high with massive hits like Kantara, RRR and KGF. The Hindi film industry roared back to dominance with a lineup of high-voltage entertainers that stamped its authority once again.
The revival began with a bang in January as Pathaan hit the screens, catapulting audiences into an adrenaline-filled spy thriller that spanned continents. Directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Yash Raj Films, the action spectacle had viewers fastening their kursi ki peti with excitement, establishing SRK’s massive comeback in flamboyant style.

SRK’s second release, Atlee’s Jawan, further fuelled the frenzy. Playing a father and son in a classic mass-action drama, the superstar delivered whistle-worthy dialogues and electrifying moments tailor-made for packed theatres. The now-iconic warning — “Bete ko haath lagaane se pehle…” — turned the film into a nationwide celebration of stardom.
However, the year’s third offering from King Khan, Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki, failed to recreate the magic. Despite high expectations from the Shah Rukh-Hirani collaboration, the immigration-themed drama about the “donkey route” struggled to strike the emotional chord audiences hoped for.
Elsewhere, Sunny Deol rekindled old glory through Gadar 2, stepping again into the shoes of the formidable Tara Singh. With patriotic fervor, thunderous punches and a quest to rescue his son from across the border, the sequel captured nostalgia and power-packed action in trademark fashion.
Karan Johar returned to his signature romantic universe with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as the vibrant cross-cultural pair overcoming family hurdles for love. The film’s catchy charm — and Alia’s “What Jhumka?” — topped conversation charts for weeks.
A heavily debated release came in the form of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor as a dangerously volatile figure battling deep-rooted father issues. While polarising in its portrayal of violence and masculinity, the film stormed ahead to become one of the biggest box-office successes of the year, showcasing Kapoor in his most intense avatar yet.
The year also saw streaming platforms shine with premium content. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Jubilee, set in the golden era of Indian cinema, enthralled audiences through stellar performances by Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aditi Rao Hydari and others. On the other hand, Kohrra, a gripping Punjab-set crime drama by Sudip Sharma and Randeep Jha, left viewers captivated till the finale with its raw characters and atmospheric storytelling.
As Bollywood wraps up 2023, the message is loud and clear — the Hindi film industry is far from fading. With SRK leading the revival charge, cinemas once again witnessed long queues, loud cheers and the magic that only the big screen can deliver.
