Nikhil Siddhartha wraps ‘Swayambhu’, calls it the biggest journey of his career

Hyderabad, Nov 27: Actor Nikhil Siddhartha has completed shooting for his first-ever period action film Swayambhu, marking the end of a two-year cinematic journey. Speaking to Hindustan Times, the actor opened up about the massive effort invested in the project, which took 170 shooting days — more than double the time he spent on Karthikeya 2.

Set in the 11th century CE, Swayambhu sees Nikhil step into the shoes of Krishnan Raman, a valiant Chola warrior and kingmaker whose story, he believes, deserves to be known. A self-confessed fan of grand historical dramas, Nikhil says he was instantly drawn to the role and the era it represents.

Preparing for the character required not just physical transformation but a deep mental shift. The team focused heavily on historical accuracy, ensuring every element — from costume to weaponry — reflected the time period. Even the Sengol, a traditional sceptre used by his character, was handled with careful respect. Nikhil added that the toughest part, humorously enough, was growing his hair for three months, refusing the option of a wig.

The film also features a unique companion — Maruthi, a majestic horse whose real name is Diamond. Nikhil spent nearly three months bonding with the animal before filming, developing an understanding that translated into a believable on-screen rapport. The actor reveals that Maruthi even “speaks” in the film, adding a creative twist.

Nikhil says the massive success of Karthikeya 2 paved the way for Swayambhu by helping secure the required budget to execute the film’s ambitious ideas. Without revealing much, he hints at visually grand sequences, including scenes that take his character and Maruthi across oceans.

With Swayambhu slated for release on February 13, 2026, the actor has several projects lined up — The India House (already half complete) and Karthikeya 3. Yet, he admits to a lingering worry: long production schedules often make him feel like he’s losing precious years of his career. Still, he hopes the enormous effort behind Swayambhu will be worth it when the film reaches the audience.
