Midnight break-in bid at Chaudi jewellery shop foiled

Daijiworld Media Network – Canacona

Canacona, Nov 25: A daring late-night attempt to break into a jewellery shop at Chaudi, Canacona, was thwarted after the alert goldsmith living next door raised an alarm, prompting a police night patrol team to rush to the spot.

According to the family, a group of 6–7 unidentified men tried to enter the shop at around 2:30 am. The gang allegedly sprayed black paint on three CCTV cameras and broke three locks while attempting to open the shutter.

Two patrolling policemen responded quickly and managed to corner the suspects. However, the gang pelted stones at them and escaped under the cover of darkness.

Police launched an extensive search through the night at the railway station, bus stand and other exit routes. A forensic team and dog squad were also pressed into service, but no major lead has emerged yet.

The incident comes at a time when Goa is witnessing a worrying rise in robberies and dacoities. The accused in the Baina armed dacoity remain untraceable, while the Dona Paula and Mapusa–Ganeshpuri cases are also unsolved. Police suspect the involvement of a Bangladeshi gang believed to have fled the country.

With similar methods used in the latest attempt, police are investigating whether the same gang or another organised group is behind the Chaudi break-in.
