Mumbai, Nov 23: Actor Suniel Shetty inaugurated the 10 km run of the WNC Half Marathon 2025 on Sunday, joined by his son Ahan Shetty, actor Riteish Deshmukh, and Western Naval Command chief, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Krishna Swaminathan.

Addressing participants at the event, the Border star expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who lost his life when a Tejas fighter aircraft crashed during the Dubai Air Show 2025. “It is an extremely sad incident. The investigation is underway. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every officer who serves the nation in uniform. I am very proud of them,” Shetty said.

Tributes poured in from across the film industry. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan shared his condolences on social media, writing, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who gave his life while showcasing the pride of our Indian Air Force, the Tejas. A brave son of India taken far too soon. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. India stands with you in this moment of immeasurable grief.”

Actor Sonu Sood also honoured the fallen pilot, stating, “India mourns the loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, a brave Tejas pilot who gave his life doing what he loved — flying for his nation. His courage and sacrifice will forever remain in our hearts. Salute to a true hero. Jai Hind.”

Wing Commander Syal died after his Tejas aircraft crashed and caught fire during the air show. His mortal remains were flown back to India on a special aircraft, and the Emirati Defence Forces accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour in recognition of his service.

A court of inquiry has been set up to determine the cause of the accident. This incident marks the second crash involving a Tejas aircraft, following a mishap near Jaisalmer in 2024.
