Dharmasthala panchayat fines shops for using single-use plastic

Beltangady, Nov 22: The local gram panchayat in Dharmasthala has imposed fines on shop owners operating in temporary stalls for using single-use plastic, officials said.

Dharamshala is a single-use plastic-free village, and the ban extends to all shops and temporary marketplaces within its jurisdiction. Shopkeepers were strictly instructed not to use disposable plastics while carrying out business. Despite repeated warnings, some vendors violated the rules, prompting the Panchayat to take action.

A total fine of Rs 5,700 was levied, and the plastic items found in the shops were confiscated. Vendors using cloth bags were commended for following the guidelines.

Officials involved in the operation included PDO Gayatri P, second grade accounts assistant Prameela, and gram panchayat staff.
