Panaji, Nov 17: Recognising the vital role of media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the Goa government has strengthened its commitment to the welfare of journalists through multiple initiatives.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the Goa State Journalist Welfare Scheme, launched in 2003, has undergone significant revisions. Earlier providing a pension of Rs 1,000 and family pension of Rs 500, the revamped scheme now offers an equal pension of Rs 10,000 to journalists and family pensioners. Eligibility includes 18 years of full-time journalistic experience and 15 years of residence in Goa.

The Assistance for Purchase of Laptop/Camera scheme, initially discontinued due to low uptake, has been re-launched following demands from the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ). Journalists who availed of the benefit five years ago can now apply again under the revamped scheme.
The Patrakar Kritadnyata Nidhi Scheme (Journalists Benevolent Fund) continues to provide immediate financial support of up to Rs 2 lakh to journalists in emergency situations. The fund covers mediclaim, house repair, scholarships for children, and other critical needs, as recommended by a dedicated sub-committee.
In addition, the Goa State Journalist Awards Scheme recognises excellence in journalism annually, with winners receiving Rs 25,000 each. This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award, carrying a prize of Rs 1 lakh, was presented to veteran cartoonist Alexyz (Alex Fernandes) for his outstanding contributions.
The Department of Information and Publicity continues to work for the upliftment of journalists, with more welfare schemes in the pipeline. Journalists are encouraged to stay informed about these initiatives to avail the benefits offered by the government.
