New Delhi, Sep 29: Swiss para-athlete Catherine Debrunner once again proved why she’s considered one of the greatest in para-sport history, winning gold in the Women’s 5000m T54 Final at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Clocking a time of 12:18.29, the 30-year-old champion edged past China’s Tian Yajuan and fellow Swiss racer Patricia Eachus to add another title to her already glittering career.

A Career Marked by Excellence
Debrunner’s dominance in the sport is well-established. After a sensational performance at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, where she won five gold medals and one silver, she arrived in New Delhi with a formidable reputation. Prior to Sunday’s race, she had already secured five golds and three silvers at this year’s World Championships.
Awarded the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability in 2023, Debrunner continues to set new benchmarks in wheelchair racing, inspiring athletes and fans across the world.
First Visit to India: "A Different Experience"
Speaking after her victory, Debrunner shared her impressions of India, where she is competing for the first time.
“It’s my first time in India and I must say it has been a totally different culture and country than I am used to otherwise. It’s definitely a very different experience.”
On the New Mondo Track and Stadium Facilities
The 2025 Championships introduced a newly-laid Mondo track, designed to boost performance. Debrunner was candid in her evaluation, noting that the surface may need time to reach optimal speed levels.
“The newly-laid Mondo track, it takes a while before they get really quick. Nevertheless, it’s been a decent track. It’s a really good stadium. Thank you very much for welcoming us here.”
A Journey of Passion and Perseverance
Reflecting on her long road to success, Debrunner recalled her beginnings as a young athlete.
“I started when I was eight. It’s been a really long journey. I am really grateful for all the experiences I have experienced. I have met a lot of amazing people, athletes… seeing all of us grow not just as athletes but also as people, it’s been just amazing.”
Now widely regarded as a legend in para athletics, Debrunner remains grounded in gratitude and passion for her sport.
“It’s my passion, and to live my passion every day is the nicest thing I can imagine.”
