Mumbai, Sep 28: Mumbai experienced heavy overnight rains under a 'red alert' warning, with rainfall intensity easing by early Sunday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), parts of south Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
Local train services on Central and Western Railways faced some delays, while buses of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) continued operations without diversions.
The IMD’s forecast at 8 am on Sunday predicted “cloudy skies with heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph across the city and suburbs,” adding that there was a “possibility of extremely heavy rain at isolated places.”
In the 24 hours ending 8.30 am Sunday, the Colaba observatory recorded 120.8 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz registered 83.8 mm. Notable readings from prominent areas included Juhu at 88 mm, Bandra at 82.5 mm, and Mahalaxmi at 28 mm.
Officials warned that high tides — 3.24 metres at 2.55 pm and low tides of 1.31 metres at 8.50 pm — could worsen waterlogging in low-lying areas during heavy showers, though low tides would help water recede faster.
The IMD also issued red alerts for neighbouring Raigad, Thane, and Palghar districts on Sunday, urging residents to exercise caution amid continuing rainfall.
