Washington, Sep 23: US Vice President Kamala Harris admitted she regretted supporting Joe Biden’s bid for a second term, saying she felt a “certain responsibility” to voice concerns about his 2024 run at a time when many Americans questioned his age.
In an interview with MSNBC, Harris said, “I have and had a certain responsibility that I should have followed through on.” Her remarks echo reflections in her memoir “107 Days,” where she recounted stepping in as the Democratic nominee after Biden initially bowed out—a contest she ultimately lost to Donald Trump.
Harris described how White House staff often deferred the question of Biden’s reelection, noting, “It’s Joe and Jill’s decision,” highlighting the president and first lady’s control over the choice. She called the decision in retrospect “recklessness,” adding, “The stakes were simply too high. This wasn’t a choice that should have been left to an individual’s ego, an individual’s ambition.”
She also explained why Pete Buttigieg was not selected as her running mate. Although he was her first choice, Harris feared that Americans might not be ready to support a ticket featuring both a Black woman and a gay man, clarifying, “It wasn't about any prejudice on my part. We had such a short period of time, and the stakes were so high.”
