Chennai, Sep 19: Popular Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away on Thursday evening after collapsing during a film shoot in Chennai, leaving the Tamil film industry in shock. He was 46.

According to hospital authorities, Shankar, who had been unwell for a few days, fainted on set and was rushed to a private hospital. Dr S. Asokan, CEO of GEM Hospital, confirmed that he was brought in with a massive gastrointestinal bleed and multiple organ failure caused by a complex abdominal condition. Despite intensive treatment, he passed away around 8:30 pm.

Fondly nicknamed “Robo” for his distinctive robot-style dance and acting, Shankar carved a special place in Tamil cinema and television with his lively comic timing and energetic performances. He began his career with small, uncredited roles, including a part in Rajinikanth’s Padayappa (1997), before rising to fame with Vijay Sethupathi’s Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara.

Over the years, he entertained audiences in numerous films such as Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Maari, Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru, Si3, Pa Paandi, Velaikkaran, Viswasam, Irumbu Thirai, and Singapore Saloon.

Tributes poured in from fans and celebrities. Kamal Haasan shared an emotional message on X, writing, “Robo Shankar. Robo is just a name. To me, you were always human. You’re like my younger brother. How could you just leave like this? Your job is done, but mine is not. You left us too soon.”

Shankar’s mortal remains will be taken to his Chennai residence, with last rites expected on Friday. He is survived by his wife, Priyanka Sankar, and their daughter, Indraja Shankar.
