Elon Musk demands staff accountability at xAI, seeks work summaries amid reorganisation

San Francisco, Sep 18: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has once again put his staff at xAI under the scanner, directing all employees to submit detailed summaries of their recent work and future plans.

In an email sent on Tuesday afternoon, Musk asked every team member to submit a one-page summary of what they had accomplished in the past four weeks and what they intended to achieve in the next four weeks. The deadline for submission, according to the mail obtained by CNN, was set for noon on Thursday.

The move comes as xAI undergoes a major restructuring, with a strategic shift towards developing specialised AI tutors in sectors such as STEM, medicine, finance, and safety. Last week, the firm reportedly laid off over 500 data annotators from its generalist AI tutor team. However, Musk’s company has announced that it plans to expand its specialised tutor workforce by “10X” in the coming months.

This is not the first time Musk has pressed for staff accountability. In August 2024, according to reports, he linked employee stock options to their individual contributions, asking for detailed one-page briefs to evaluate performance.

Musk’s hands-on style has often sparked debate. After acquiring Twitter in 2022, he famously instructed engineers to print out their latest lines of code, only to later ask them to destroy the printouts.

With xAI entering a critical phase of reorganisation, Musk’s latest demand signals his intent to maintain tight oversight over his team, ensuring only high-impact contributions remain at the centre of the company’s ambitious AI mission.
