Miraj, Aug 29: A 60-year-old man died of a heart attack during a Ganesh arrival procession in Miraj, Sangli district, late Wednesday night.

The deceased, identified as Babasaheb Kalgutgi, had a history of cardiac ailments. He collapsed while standing on a tractor trolley recording a video of the Vadar Galli Ganesh Mandal procession, which featured loud music and bright lights. He was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following the tragedy, the mandal announced that the remaining rituals would be observed at a subdued scale.

Meanwhile, in Kolhapur, police cracked down on several Ganesh mandals found violating noise and light regulations. During a procession in Rajarampuri, sound levels reached as high as 120 dB before systems were shut down at midnight.

Superintendent of Police Yogesh Kumar Gupta said, “As many as 327 Ganesh mandals violated sound limits. Cases have been initiated, and strict action will follow during the immersion processions on September 6.”

On Thursday, SP Gupta held a meeting warning sound and light system operators of stringent action in case of further violations.
