Mangaluru, Aug 19: The KSRTC has submitted an application seeking permission to introduce bus services on 28 new routes from Mangaluru to various destinations, citing public demand. However, private bus owners have expressed strong objections to the proposal.

The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority chaired by deputy commissioner Darshan H V. On behalf of KSRTC, divisional officer Rajesh Shetty presented a memorandum requesting priority consideration for the new routes.

He said that several applications were filed based on requests from the public for new routes. “Even where private buses are already operating, timings can be adjusted to allow KSRTC buses to ply. The central government has sanctioned 100 electric buses for the city. Under the state government’s ‘Shakti’ scheme, women passengers should also be able to benefit from these services,” he stated.

Objecting to the move, advocates M V Nagesh and Parasara Kumar, representing private bus owners, said that a joint survey must first be conducted to assess whether the new routes are necessary before granting permits.

Abdul Aziz Partipadi, president of the Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners’ Association, highlighted the poor financial condition of private bus operators. “If KSRTC buses are introduced in the city limits, private operators will be pushed onto the streets. Unhealthy competition in urban areas must be avoided,” he said.

Hanumanth Kamath, president of the Citizens’ Protection Committee, urged that direct buses be introduced to Krishnapura, Kunjattabail, Mangaladevi, and Sultan Bathery, as the DC’s office has now been shifted to Padil’s Prajasoudha.

G K Bhat suggested restricting the movement of tankers in the city from 7 am to 7 pm to ease traffic congestion in areas like Nanthoor and Pumpwell.

Dakshina Kannada Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Association president Vishnumurthy demanded that permits be issued only to drivers with valid licenses and badges. He pointed out that the city already has more autos than required, causing difficulties for drivers, along with inadequate stands. Calls were also made to allow e-autos but to avoid zonal restrictions.

Speaking on behalf of e-auto drivers, Vishwanath, Prajesh, and Mohammed Riyaz pressed for opportunities for e-autos while opposing zonal divisions. Representatives Arun Kumar (Rakshana Vedike Auto Unit), Lokesh Shetty (general secretary, Auto Drivers’ Union), and Ganesh R (convenor, Karnataka Drivers’ Union Auto Wing) also raised related concerns.

The 28 proposed KSRTC routes include: KSRTC Bus Stand–Surathkal–Kateel, KSRTC–Surathkal–Farangipete, KSRTC–Farangipete–Surathkal, Mangaluru Railway Station–Nanthur–Padil, Padil–Kodikal, Mangaluru–Ulaibettu, State Bank–Farangipete, State Bank–Mangaluru Railway Junction, Mangaluru Railway Junction–Adyapadi, Kankanady Market–Adyapadi, State Bank–Kannagudde, State Bank–Kateel, State Bank–Kinnigoli, Padil–Akash Bhavan, and others.

Currently, four buses are already operating on a temporary permit between State Bank and Moodbidri.

Local / Shuttle buses between Mangalore/State Bank - Farangipet is the need of the hour. People in this route especially students and women during peak hours and latenight are facing difficulty in commuting safely.

Good initiative by KSRTC 👍, Even they should operate more buses frequently(5min 1 bus) in routes like Karkala-Mangaluru/Statebank, Udupi-Mangaluru/Statebank ,so that it helps Students to travel by having STUDENT PASS, and Women's can travel under Shakti scheme and for aged people can make use of Senior citizen concession ticket.

KSRTC should give priority to areas where there are no or insufficient buses. There is need for direct buses from State Bank to MRPL via Kulai Honnekatte (bypassing Surathkal) and another to Soorinje via same route. Buses also required from city to MRPL via Baikampady and Jokatte.

I would like to request an increase in the number of buses operating on the Mangalore–Udupi route. Introducing more services will greatly benefit the daily commuters, students, and travelers who rely on this route for work, education, and other purposes. More frequent buses will also help reduce crowding and make travel more convenient and efficient for everyone.

Competition improves service. It is better that KSRTC comes up with new routes, so that people get a fair justice to the expenses incurred. Without a doubt, Mangalore Private bus service has been good, but let us have more players to have healthy services for general public. Auto Rickshaws, yet again is the highest minimum rates are in DK, as per my knowledge.

Transportation costs here are much more than in metro cities & the services provided are horrible; with nil intracity travel infrastructure; unless the government starts its own full-fledged city bus services, people will keep suffering at the hands of these sloppy bus operators and autos!

KSRTC should introduce the new bus routes to Mangalore to Moodbidri , Moodbidri to Karkala route. Private bus sizes have shrinked over time specially during the peak hours. Private Bus operators are treating people like cattle (Even Cattle are being treated well now). Public Interest should be above interest of the Private parties at all times.

I think autorikshaw and bus fare in Mangalore are the highest in India. Let auto and bus staff learn to be passenger friendly to improve their business instead of opposing KSRTC buses.

Good move by Ksrtc this is definitely required. It's a competition and should be welcome however many with other interests will not be for it. Btw Rickshaw union objections wow even when they claim there are more rickshaws than demand well try to find one when you want and you dont get it. That's the truth
