New Delhi, Aug 18: Obesity is fast emerging as a major health challenge in India, with rising cases particularly among women and children. Highlighting the issue, nutritionist Nmami Agarwal shared a video on Instagram on Saturday, linking it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address from Red Fort.
In his speech, PM Modi urged citizens to reduce oil consumption by 10% as a first step in combating obesity. Supporting this call, Nmami Agarwal said, “Obesity rates in India are rising, particularly amongst women and children. According to the National Family Health Survey, 24% of Indian women and 23% of Indian men are obese or overweight.”
She pointed out that obesity is no longer just about diet but also influenced by genetics, hormones, stress, sleep, and lifestyle. “India today isn’t just battling undernutrition anymore, we’re battling obesity too,” she noted, blaming processed foods, oily cooking, irregular meals, and lack of physical activity for the trend.
The nutritionist also shared practical tips for healthy and sustainable weight loss:
• Balance your plate with fibre and protein-rich foods.
• Cut back on sugar and packaged snacks.
• Stay active with daily movement.
• Get quality sleep to regulate hunger hormones.
• Focus on consistent healthy habits instead of quick-fix diets.
“Obesity is not just about what you put on your plate. It’s a lifestyle issue that needs consistent effort to tackle,” Agarwal concluded.
