Pregnant Bangladeshi prisoner flees JJ Hospital, Mumbai on alert

Mumbai, Aug 16: A pregnant Bangladeshi prisoner escaped from Mumbai’s JJ Hospital on Thursday afternoon, prompting a city-wide manhunt and raising questions about the security protocols for prisoners.

The escapee, 25-year-old Rubina Irshad Sheikh, was arrested by Vashi Police on August 7 for obtaining an Indian passport using a fake birth certificate. She faced multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act, and the Foreigners Act, and was lodged at Byculla Women’s Jail.

Rubina had been taken to JJ Hospital on August 11 for treatment of fever, cold, and a skin infection, as well as for a medical checkup related to her five-month pregnancy. On August 14, she managed to slip past the police escort during the hospital visit, reportedly pushing a constable and fleeing amid the hospital crowd.

Mumbai Police have launched a city-wide search to apprehend her, with investigations underway into how she managed to escape despite being under escort.
