Tulu comedy sensation ‘Private Challenge’ reaches historic 200th episode

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 10: Daijiworld Television’s hugely popular Tulu comedy show Private Challenge, which has captivated audiences across the globe, is celebrating a remarkable milestone: its 200th episode. The special episode will be telecast on Sunday at 9:00 pm IST on Daijiworld TV, and will also be available on YouTube and other social media platforms.

Launched on May 18, 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, Private Challenge is featured by Tulu cine and stage artiste Aravind Bolar and Daijiworld Media founder Walter Nandalike. Initially conceived as a short-term project to engage audiences during lockdown, the show struck a chord with viewers and soon became a long-running favourite.

“At the beginning, we planned the show only until Covid restrictions eased. But public demand kept it alive. By the time we reached the 60th episode, we thought of concluding, but the overwhelming response from fans across the world encouraged us to continue. Four seasons later, here we are, celebrating the 200th episode,” said Walter Nandalike.

A unique format and unmatched popularity

One of the hallmarks of the show is that Aravind Bolar has portrayed 200 different characters over its run, bringing to life diverse aspects of Tulunadu’s society, culture, and professions. This creative variety has won the hearts of not only Tulu-speaking audiences but also viewers unfamiliar with the language.

The show’s reach has been phenomenal, with over 30 million views on YouTube alone, making it perhaps the only Tulu comedy series to achieve such a massive global audience. In addition to television and social media, Private Challenge has also made its mark on national OTT platforms including MX Player, Vi (Vodafone Idea), Hungama, and others.

Global recognition for Tulunadu art

Thanks to the success of Private Challenge, the duo Bolar and Nandalike have been invited to over a dozen foreign countries for live performances and as special guests. These include Thailand, Australia (Perth and Sydney), Israel, Nigeria, and almost all Gulf countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

“Getting the chance to perform in 200 different characters has been a blessing for my career. The show gave me international recognition and the joy of seeing even non-Tuluvas eagerly watch our episodes,” said Aravind Bolar.

A team effort behind the laughter

While audiences see just the humour and entertainment, Walter Nandalike credits the entire production team for the show’s success:

“From the production director to the last crew member — management, cameramen, editors, graphic designers, MCR team, marketing staff, location crew, music team, make-up artiste, transport team, and every actor — each one’s contribution has been essential,” he said.

Over the seasons, Private Challenge evolved from a two-character format to including many senior and junior Tulu stage artistes, enriching its storytelling and appeal.

What’s next?

Season 4 will conclude with this 200th episode (also the 40th episode of the current season). However, Bolar and Nandalike have assured fans that the show will return after a short break, with fresh concepts and exciting new ideas.

“Every season we have introduced something new. We promise to come back with even more engaging content,” said the duo.

Tune in for the landmark 200th episode of Private Challenge this Sunday at 9:00 pm IST on Daijiworld TV, YouTube, and other digital platforms and join the celebration of Tulunadu’s favourite laughter destination.
