Mangaluru’s Gillaine Vail Pinto awarded PhD for study on Leptospirosis biomarkers

Mangaluru, Jul 25: Gillaine Vail Pinto has successfully completed her PhD viva voce and defense of her PhD thesis at Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research (NUCSER), Nitte (Deemed to be University) Paneer Campus, Deralakatte, for her thesis, titled ‘Circulating MicroRNAs as Novel Biomarkers for Leptospirosis’, which investigated the diagnostic ability of circulating microRNAs in the detection of Leptospirosis and also screened the prevalent leptospiral serogroups among patients infected with leptospirosis in the region of Mangaluru.

She carried out her doctoral research under the guidance of Dr Krishna Kumar B, associate professor, department of infectious diseases & microbial genomics, NUCSER.

Her doctoral committee included Prof Dr Indrani Karunasagar, director, DST NU-TEC; Prof Dr Anirban Chakraborty, director, NUCSER & dean-faculty of biological sciences; Dr Praveen Rai HOD & associate professor, department of infectious diseases & microbial genomics, NUCSER; Dr Shama Prakash K, professor, general medicine, KSHEMA. 

Gillaine Vail Pinto is a native of Kulshekar, Mangaluru and is the daughter of Ronald J Pinto and Noreen Pinto.
