New Delhi, Jul 24: In a stunning display of courage and precision, two Indian Army helicopter pilots executed a high-risk rescue mission in flood-hit Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, saving a child trapped in the raging waters on July 23.
Colonel Shaurya Singh and Lieutenant Colonel Abhijit Singh, both seasoned pilots of the Indian Army, took on the dangerous mission after receiving reports of a child stranded near a violently overflowing stream amid flash floods triggered by relentless rains.
With low visibility, strong winds, and treacherous terrain complicating the effort, the officers opted for an aerial rescue—a decision that would test the limits of both machine and human skill.

Braving a turbulent atmosphere filled with low-hanging power lines, unstable ground conditions, and rapidly rising water, the pilots navigated their chopper into position and hovered just a foot above the raging current. In a nerve-wracking moment, they successfully airlifted the stranded child to safety.
The rescue, which lasted only a few minutes, demanded pinpoint coordination and nerves of steel—any error could have been fatal.
A Mission Beyond the Call of Duty
The operation has drawn widespread admiration from across the country, hailed as a textbook example of military professionalism under pressure.
“This act embodies the highest traditions of the Indian Armed Forces — selfless, brave, and committed to protecting every life, in peace or conflict,” said a senior Army official.
Both officers have been lauded for going beyond the call of duty, reaffirming the Indian Army’s vital role as first responders in humanitarian crises across the nation.
Heroism That Inspires
While the floodwaters eventually receded, the images of that daring chopper rescue have left a lasting impression. The child is now safe, and the two pilots — Col Shaurya Singh and Lt Col Abhijit Singh — are being hailed as real-life heroes.
Their fearless response in a moment of crisis once again highlights that for the Indian Army, duty to country means protecting lives not only on the frontlines, but wherever danger threatens.
