New Delhi, Jul 23: India and China on Wednesday expressed satisfaction over the prevailing peace and tranquility in their border areas, signaling a gradual normalisation of bilateral ties. The remarks came during the 34th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), held in New Delhi.

The Indian delegation was led by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (East Asia), while the Chinese side was represented by Hong Liang, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department.

Both sides agreed to:

• Sustain regular diplomatic and military communication through established mechanisms
• Advance effective border management based on outcomes from previous dialogues, including the 23rd round of Special Representatives' Talks and the 33rd WMCC meeting
• Prepare for the next round of Special Representatives' Talks on the boundary issue, to be held later this year in India

The Chinese delegation leader also met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, reinforcing efforts to stabilise border relations and deepen engagement.

In a related development, China welcomed India’s resumption of tourist visas for Chinese citizens, calling it a “positive move” and expressing willingness to work jointly to facilitate smoother cross-border travel.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing during the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ call, marking his first visit to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. He conveyed greetings from Indian leaders and discussed the trajectory of bilateral relations, reaffirming the importance of leadership-level engagement in shaping ties.
