New Delhi, Jul 22: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Kingdom, India reiterated its concerns over the continued presence of Khalistani extremists on British soil and emphasized the need for their extradition, along with that of other fugitive criminals.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, during a special media briefing on Tuesday, said India has consistently raised the issue with the UK government and will persist in doing so.
“This is a matter of concern not only for India but also for the UK, as these elements impact social harmony and public order. We expect our partners to take this seriously,” Misri stated.

The Khalistani issue has drawn increasing scrutiny, especially after multiple incidents in the UK, including vandalism at the Indian High Commission in London in March 2023 and a security breach outside Chatham House earlier this year involving External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
India had earlier strongly protested to the British government over the lack of adequate security and demanded accountability after Khalistani supporters stormed parts of the Indian diplomatic premises in London.
On the subject of extraditing wanted individuals sheltering in the UK, Misri confirmed that India remains actively engaged with British authorities.
“We have continued to make the case for the return of fugitives wanted under Indian law. While the matter follows a legal process in the UK, we are closely pursuing each case,” he added.
This marks PM Modi’s fourth visit to the UK. During the trip, he will engage in comprehensive discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on strengthening bilateral ties. He is also scheduled to meet King Charles III.
Talks will cover a broad spectrum — from trade and technology to defence, climate change, education, and enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between the two nations.
