Madras High Court upholds equality: Orders unrestricted temple access for SCs in Ariyalur

Chennai, Jul 18: In a powerful affirmation of constitutional values, the Madras High Court has issued a landmark directive ensuring that Scheduled Caste (SC) individuals are not denied entry into the Puthukudu Ayyanar Temple in Ariyalur district.

Responding to a petition filed by A. Venkatesan, an SC resident who alleged caste-based exclusion, the court instructed the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) to take strict action against any individuals or groups obstructing access to the temple. The ruling comes ahead of the temple's consecration ceremonies scheduled from July 16 to 31.

Reiterating the core values of equality enshrined in the Indian Constitution, the court observed, “There can be no caste discrimination in a country governed by the rule of law.” The court also invoked the Temple Entry Authorisation Act of 1947, passed after relentless efforts by social reformers to ensure temple access for all communities.

Venkatesan’s petition revealed that although the Puthukudu Ayyanar Temple was historically open to all castes, control allegedly shifted in 2019 to a dominant caste group, which not only barred SC devotees from entry but also demolished their contributions—including a large Ayyanar statue, which was reportedly dumped in a well. A metal gate was installed, restricting SC community members to worship from outside the premises.

Shockingly, despite these grave violations, local authorities failed to intervene, citing potential law and order issues.

The Madras High Court's intervention has now brought a glimmer of hope and justice to the affected community, reinforcing that temples belong to all, regardless of caste, and that discrimination has no place in a democratic society.
