New Delhi, July 16: Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has strongly criticised Marcus Rashford over reports suggesting the forward is seeking a move to FC Barcelona, calling the situation “soul-destroying” and undeserved.
Speaking to Sky Bet, Sheringham said players should value the opportunity to represent a club of United’s stature instead of looking to walk away.
“As a young footballer, you dream of playing for a club like Manchester United. When you get there, you should appreciate it. You don’t just throw it away,” Sheringham said.
He drew a parallel with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left Arsenal following a fallout with Mikel Arteta, saying such exits reflect poorly on the player’s professionalism.
“It broke my heart to see Aubameyang leave Arsenal in that fashion. Now Rashford appears to be doing the same. From where I stand, a move from Manchester United to Barcelona would be a step up that Rashford hasn’t earned.”
Rashford made 15 Premier League appearances during the 2024/25 season, scoring a few goals early on, including in manager Ruben Amorim’s debut match. However, a reported clash with Amorim led to his omission from the squad in December and a subsequent loan move to Aston Villa in February.
Manchester United, currently facing a squad overhaul, are looking to offload several players including Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho, who are all reportedly seeking exits.
Sheringham believes United’s transfer struggles are being exploited by other clubs:
“Everyone knows United need to sell, so rival clubs are offering lowball deals. Spending money is easy; recouping it is the hard part.”
As the summer transfer window progresses, Rashford’s future remains uncertain, but Sheringham’s stance is clear: he doesn’t believe the England international has earned a move to the Spanish giants.
