Kasargod, Jun 3: A fire broke out in a garment shop operating in the State Hotel building near the old bus stand in the city, causing extensive damage.

The burkha shop, owned by Nizam, a resident of Cherkala, was completely gutted in the fire. Around 5.30 am on Monday, smoke was seen emanating from the shop, following which the fire brigade was alerted.

Fire tenders from Uppala, Kasargod, and Kuttikol rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. However, by then, the interior of the shop had been entirely destroyed.

Thanks to the timely action by the fire and emergency services, the fire was prevented from spreading to other nearby commercial establishments. An electrical short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
